argue that Royalists held conflicting opinions
D: tension,

"evidence to suggest" and "evidence that suggests" are both acceptable in this sort of context. neither is a basis for elimination.
normally you would see "evidence that suggests..."
however, they've used "evidence to suggest..." here, in order to avoid writing evidence THAT suggests THAT xxxxx. not because it's wrong -- just because it's ugly.
1.numbers用greater不用more
2.主语单数用 its 不是they their
E:“now with numbers five times greater than” does NOT modify the idea of "surviving a close brush with extinction"; instead, it is a much later situation, far removed from (and in considerable contrast to) the near-extinction. Therefore, a modifier is inappropriate here; a separate clause, written in a different tense (as in the correct answer), is a better solution.
In Scotland, the wild salmon’s numbers have been reduced by uncontrolled deep-sea and coastal netting, by pollution, and by various other threats to the fish’s habitat.
The gyrfalcon, an Arctic bird of prey, has survived a close brush with (A) extinction; its numbers are now five-times greater than when the use of DDT was sharply restricted in the early 1970’s.
number/numbers:
表示某物的数量,可以说the number of sth,也可以说number/numbers。如:
Los Angeles has a higher number of family dwellings per capita than does any other large city.
Upset by the recent downturn in production numbers during the first half of the year, the board of directors, at its quarterly meeting, raised the possibility of adding worker incentives.

Ron - the evidence in the argument is based on where this strain of wheat has been found growing, NOW in modern times (as you can tell from the present perfect, "has been found growing"). if we're going to argue about the domestication of this wheat, in ancient times, then we need to know that the same conditions that prevail now also prevailed back then.
