本题A一样，省略的还有was。所以A错。

老师，OG的解释是说后面那个从句的结构要和主句平行，所以E选项里面it指代主句主语，补完整的话就是owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land was (the goal) of earlier generations。
可是为什么不能是比较the goal of the two generations呢？A选项的that如果理解为指代goal的话，为什么不可以呢？比如说like that of earlier generation, the goal of the young adult is owning and living...感觉这样就很对>

看到过一个解释，说that如果指代goal的话中间隔着插入语，不优。不如E结构平行。
