根据absence选择leaves 只有CE对，either or 排除C ---》 E
C选项中 business and financial records in the nineteenth century中应该用of吧，表示19世纪的记录，而不是“在19世纪时的记录”
考察：
前：the absence of习惯用语
中：谓语：单复数，leaves
后：either 。。or的平行
看动词第三人称和what与how的平行即可
