In the English-speaking world Anton Chekhov is by far better known for his plays than for his short stories, but it was during his lifetime that Chekhov's stories made him popular while his plays were given a more ambivalent reception, even by his fellow writers.
by far better known for his plays than for his short stories, but it was during his lifetime that
by far better known for his plays than he was for his short stories, but during his lifetime
known far better for his plays than he was for his short stories, but during his lifetime it was
far better known for his plays than were his short stories, but it was during his lifetime that
far better known for his plays than for his short stories, but during his lifetime
本题中的比较词为better known than,在(A)(E)中,对比的两者为his plays和his short stories;在(B)(C)中,具有该关系的两者为“现在的plays”和“过去的短故事(he was)”;在(D)中,具有该关系的两者为Anton Chekhov和his short stories。 所以具有better known than关系的两者是his plays和his short stories,此两者需要在语法上保持平行,可以排除(B)(C)(D)。
The use of "by far" is generally restricted to superlative forms.... You are by far the smartest around here..... correct
But with comparatives "by far" is awkward - You are far smarter than the others around here. .. correct
by far和far better
E far better known 比by far better known 更符合使用习惯
Anton Chekhov is far better known for his plays than his short stories were(known for his plays), 比较对象是AC和 short stories
mark:
D倒装又省略:were his short stories= AC is far better known for his plays than his short stories were (known for his plays)
far better known for A than for B.
大结构,转折是在by far ... but it was during 还是转折在作品上?
A. The it was. . . that. . . construction introduces additional words that do not contribute to meaning. If by far is intended to modify is better known . . . it should be placed after known, or set off by commas, to prevent far from seeming to go with better. If by far is intended to modify better, this is incorrect usage.
1)it was during his lifetime that...
Anton Chekhov is far better known for his plays than his short stories were(known for his plays), 比较对象是AC和 short stories

it was 是什么呢?
看到一种解释:by far表示非常修饰形容词时,用于最高级的前面,或比较级的后面;
by far + 最高级
比较级 + by far

Chekhov's stories made him popular(逻辑主语) was during his lifetime。
