Researchers hypothesize that granitic soil is the ideal construction material for the desert tortoise because it is not so hard that it makes burrowing difficult or so soft that it could cause tunnels to collapse.
so hard that it makes burrowing difficult or so soft that it could cause
hard enough to make burrowing difficult or soft enough as to cause
so hard as to make burrowing difficult or soft enough so it causes
as hard as to make burrowing difficult or as soft as to cause
too hard, making burrowing difficult, nor too soft, so as to cause
题目分析:
本题难度较大,尤其是选项(A)和选项(D)之间,可能有些难以抉择。
选项分析:
选项A:Correct. 本选项在语法和逻辑上均是正确的。
选项B:需将不定式短语to make burrowing difficult和to cause tunnels to collapse改为结果状语从句,这点考查了不定式和从句的区别。用之于本题,主句讲的是:
花岗岩土壤并没有那么硬,也没有那么软(hard enough/soft enough)
在主句所讲的状态出现时,显然,让“掘土更难”和“让隧道垮塌”这两件事均不会开始发生,也不会让这两件事从开始变结束。
选项C:不定式错误同选项(B)。另外,enough和so是重复的。
选项D:不定式错误同选项(B)。
选项E:本选项的错误很容易看出来。too…to…句型是大家在初中就学过的,至少应该写成这个句型,以避免语法错误(当然,改成too…to…句型也不正确,依然存在不定式的问题)。
(来自CD论坛)在A is as adj. as B这个结构里,最要紧的是第二个as
第二个as的出现就表明了,你是在对比两件事物,那就必须保证这个A和B是可比的,是同种的
The book is not as good to read. 这个as就是为了强调good的程度,而to read是我要说的动作。
而The book is not as good as that one. 第一个as还是为了强调good的程度,而第二个as就表明我是在比较两个东西。
那具体到The soil is not as hard as to make it difficult to burrow....
这个第二个as的出现,明显就应该表明我是要比较两个东西了,可是"to make it difficult to burrow",暂且不管它是不是名词结构,它和那个soil都不是一个概念,不可比。这个才是最最主要的错误点~
这个姓毕的老师快闭嘴吧,凭什么一定用从句啊,so as to也是对的,B错是因为enough as to中as 是多余的。别误人子弟了,逗死了。
虽然你叫我闭嘴,但为了让您的学习更有效率,我还是有几句话不得不说,您见谅:
1. so as to/so that/enough to从语法上来说都是对的,但并不是在任意场景下都能使用,解释里的蓝色部分是可以点击的,那里会比较详尽的解释什么时候需要用从句,什么时候需要用不定式,建议参考。
2. 确实没有enough as to,只有enough to do,但为了不“误人子弟”,我还是需要啰嗦几句,正好解释一下1中为什么说纵然so as to/so that/enough to从语法上来说都对,但有些语境下不能使用。
这里不能直接把enough as to的as去掉,纵然enough to在语法上是对了, 但是在本题的语境下是不对的。在肯定句中,so as to等词和enough to的意思是相同的,GMAT考试中也不用做区分。但本题是否定句,not enough to的意思是:不够的(如果您有兴趣,可以翻阅柯林斯等比较”正经“的字典,尽量不要在百度里翻),例如:
It's not enough to get rid of raw sewage by pumping it out to sea. (将未经处理的污水排入海中了事是不够的)
在本题中,我们想说的是,没有硬到某种程度以及没有软到某种程度,显然不是“挖洞是不够的”。(同时,也不能把not enough to隔开,类似于not hard enough to)

A: we want different tenses, because one of these things is something that's permanently true (it makes burrowing difficult) while the other represents only the potential that something could happen (it could cause tunnels to collapse).
this simpler sentence, with the same construction, should be easier to understand:
Frank is extremely angry and could start yelling or punching the wall at any moment.
D: as...as to - no such structure; so...as to - the right structure
A. it is not so adj that...or so adj that...做到了or前后平行,所有的it指的都是这土,
D.as...as...的意思可以理解为比较,和so that的用法和意思不一样。比较需要结构和逻辑并列,hard不能和to make比较。
引申一下,so,,,as to在gmat里属于suspect选项,不能用来判正误
对了,enough that是错的,再补充一点,以防毕老师不知道,还改成从句,快拉倒吧。
感谢您的提醒。解析里的原句是:“需将不定式短语to make burrowing difficult和to cause tunnels to collapse改为结果状语从句”。可能是我写的让您产生了歧义,再次给您道歉。我的意思并不是说要改成enough that,而是要改成一个“状语从句”。确实没有enough that这个句型哈,但改成“正经”的结果状语从句还是好的。

D 不对,as hard as, as soft as是平行,但是意思错了,是和它一样软,和它一样硬
这题搬运一下Ron解释供参考吧:
关于A 是平行的:they're pretty darn parallel. in fact, they're EXACTLY parallel.
so + [adjective] + that + it + [verb]
both parts have exactly the same form.
incidentally—
the verbs are in different tenses, but that's irrelevant to parallelism.
remember: from the standpoint of grammar, ALL verbs are equivalent.
verb TENSES are determined ENTIRELY by meaning/context, and NEVER by grammar.
here, we want different tenses, because one of these things is something that's permanently true (it makes burrowing difficult) while the other represents only the potential that something could happen (it could cause tunnels to collapse).
this simpler sentence, with the same construction, should be easier to understand:
Frank is extremely angry and could start yelling or punching the wall at any moment.
关于D 是idiom错误:Is it incorrect idiom? as .. as to
yep. that's not a thing.
so (adjective) as to (verb) is a thing, but that construction doesn't figure in this problem. (it appears in choice C but is plainly not parallel to its counterpart.)
https://www.manhattanprep.com/gmat/forums/granitic-soil-t31897.html
A选项:it都指代soil,语义没有问题,;D选项用了as..as...已经是比较了,而原文并没有比较的意思,所以语义错误,不选
毕老师的答案哦,有时候让我就是觉得是看着答案写解释,你知道了答案你就编怎么对就好了
看到别的论坛的解体方法:
1- 识别出是平行结构先
然后就比较好判断了
平行结构,平行结构,平行结构。
在A is as adj. as B这个结构里,最要紧的是第二个as
第二个as的出现就表明了,你是在对比两件事物,那就必须保证这个A和B是可比的,是同种的
The book is not as good to read. 这个as就是为了强调good的程度,而to read是我要说的动作。
而The book is not as good as that one. 第一个as还是为了强调good的程度,而第二个as就表明我是在比较两个东西。
那具体到The soil is not as hard as to make it difficult to burrow....
这个第二个as的出现,明显就应该表明我是要比较两个东西了,可是"to make it difficult to burrow",暂且不管它是不是名词结构,它和那个soil都不是一个概念,不可比。这个才是最最主要的错误点~
D选项as...as比较前后两个事物,但后面是to do,非名词,故错误
E虽然错,但非要让他用too to来判断很难赞同。
语义与逻辑大于形式。
选A(从句)不选D(不定式)是因为在主句所讲的状态出现时,显然,让“掘土更难”和“让隧道垮塌”这两件事均不会开始发生,也不会让这两件事从开始变结束。
虽然A比起D真的挺wordy......
intended meaning!!!选d的话语法没有错,但是意思错了,这样写的话就会变成拿it 与to do 去比较了!显然有问题
A, 虽然一个是makes一个是could cause,在语气/时态上有差异,但句子结构都是so adj that sth do sth,构成平行。太硬就不能挖洞是客观事实,用一般现在时;太软导致建筑崩塌则是一种可能性而不是客观事实,用could. 平行是语法要求,时态则由句子内容/意思决定,不同的时态可以表达出不同的意思。
so/as to do语意上等于so/that,差异在于as to直接接动作,不再接主语;as/as sth,not as/as sth,not so/as sth意思是和某物一样如何,没有as/as to do或not as/as to do的用法
D,it is not as hard as to make burrowing difficult更多会指它不是和使难挖洞一样的硬。
1、语义上,需要将不定式短语to make burrowing difficult和to cause tunnels to collapse改为结果状语从句,这点考查了不定式和从句的区别。用之于本题,主句讲的是:
花岗岩土壤并没有那么硬,也没有那么软(hard enough/soft enough)
在主句所讲的状态出现时,显然,让“掘土更难”和“让隧道垮塌”这两件事均不会开始发生,也不会让这两件事从开始变结束。
2、E中的too-to使用也不对
A 现在看来很平行结构,再加上so……that……
选的D,as hard as, as soft as是平行,但是意思错了,是和它一样软,和它一样硬,不对
as.. as to
D. A is as...as B (A,B 比较). It (A) is not as hard as to make (B)错的
D. A is as much as to do比较对象啊都不对等肯定是错的
