我觉得可能E错在使用了定语从句，限定性定语从句强调“有的”和“没有的”对比，这句话意思就变成了，冰只能在temperate的地区存在（那么不temperate的地区不能存在）但是原句并没有这个意思。而且个人认为，in which强调了“冰存在”这个事情发生的时间（in an age），而when仅仅是说这个时间怎么样怎么样。
