Noting that the Federal Reserve had raised a key short-term interest rate again last month, analysts said that they expected orders for durable goods to decline soon because rising interest rates makes it more expensive to buy them on credit
rising interest rates makes it more expensive to buy them on credit
rising interest rates make buying on credit more expensive
a rise in interest rates make it more expensive to buy on credit
a rise in interest rates make buying on credit more expensive
a rise in interest rates makes it more expensive for them to be bought on credit
题目分析:
本题难度相对较大。很多选项均不具备语法错误,考生们需要格外注意。
选项分析:
A选项:整体划线部分是原因状语从句,其主语为rising interest rates。请注意,它不是一个ing短语,而是核心词为rates的名词,rising是定语(如果想构成动名词短语,至少要用raising,这才是一个及物动词)。显然地,rates是复数名词,和其谓语动词makes单复数不一致。另外,不定式短语to buy them on credit需改为ing短语buying them on credit,这点考查了不定式和ing的区别。用之于本题,“以信贷方式购买”这一事件是make的宾语。整句的意思为:
上升的利率让以信贷方式购买东西变得更贵。
此时make对于“以信贷方式购买”的约束力其实较弱,这是因为,利率的上升并不能控制或约束“以信贷方式购买东西”这一事件的发生与否,而只是让这件事变得更贵,成本变得更高。因此,本题中make的宾语应用ing的形式。
注意区别于:
Scoring high in GMAT makes me (to) feel happy.
例句中之所以用不定式短语to feel happy的原因是此时make的约束力较强,即,我是否感到开心被“GMAT分数考的高”所控制。在绝大多数语境下, make的约束力均较强。
另外,代词them的指代对象没有问题,是其身前的名词durable goods。
B选项:Correct. 本选项在语法和逻辑上均是正确的。
C选项:主语a rise in interest rates是单数名词,和其谓语动词make主谓不一致;不定式短语to buy them on credit需改为ing短语buying them on credit,该错误同选项(A)。
D选项:a rise in interest rates和谓语动词make主谓不一致错误同(C)。
E选项:不定式的复合结构for them to be bought on credit错误同选项(A)。
This book is hard for me to read.
(I experience difficulty in reading this book.)
It is difficult for Liz to talk to her ex-husband.
(liz has trouble talking to her ex. we don't know whether the converse is true.)
so, choice E is saying that the appliances themselves have to spend a lot of money "to be bought on credit". well, that doesn't make any sense.
为什么此题不能以这种思路来做呢?
记得有一道题就是这样排除了被adj修饰的noun,选的increase作为主语的
In the pair above, the incorrect example is wrong because political situations don't "cause gas prices"; that's nonsense. (Gas prices are not an event precipitated by political events.) In this instance, "increasing" is an adjective.
We're talking about the action of "buying on credit".
In addition, "buying" is the best noun available, because there's no dedicated noun form available (e.g., there's no such thing as, say, "buyage"). By contrast, the noun "increase" is available.
你没有记错,我正是因为那道题“political situations have caused an increase in gas prices”是正确答案,所以这里我选择了a rise,但是一般来说,rise做动词,rising做形容词使用,表示量的增加名词increase更合适,所以这道题跟那道题有有所不同
不过我查了一下词典,也查到“We are expecting a rise in interest rates.”
them is highly ambiguous, because it could refer to durable goods, orders, interest rates...almost anything登录 或 注册 后可以参加讨论
实际上,利率上升不会导致耐用品更贵,而是导致借钱买耐用品这个行为更贵。
