Noting that the Federal Reserve had raised a key short-term interest rate again last month, analysts said that they expected orders for durable goods to decline soon because rising interest rates makes it more expensive to buy them on credit
rising interest rates makes it more expensive to buy them on credit
rising interest rates make buying on credit more expensive
a rise in interest rates make it more expensive to buy on credit
a rise in interest rates make buying on credit more expensive
a rise in interest rates makes it more expensive for them to be bought on credit
题目分析:
本题难度相对较大。很多选项均不具备语法错误,考生们需要格外注意。
选项分析:
A选项:整体划线部分是原因状语从句,其主语为rising interest rates。请注意,它不是一个ing短语,而是核心词为rates的名词,rising是定语(如果想构成动名词短语,至少要用raising,这才是一个及物动词)。显然地,rates是复数名词,和其谓语动词makes单复数不一致。另外,不定式短语to buy them on credit需改为ing短语buying them on credit,这点考查了不定式和ing的区别。用之于本题,“以信贷方式购买”这一事件是make的宾语。整句的意思为:
上升的利率让以信贷方式购买东西变得更贵。
此时make对于“以信贷方式购买”的约束力其实较弱,这是因为,利率的上升并不能控制或约束“以信贷方式购买东西”这一事件的发生与否,而只是让这件事变得更贵,成本变得更高。因此,本题中make的宾语应用ing的形式。
注意区别于:
Scoring high in GMAT makes me (to) feel happy.
例句中之所以用不定式短语to feel happy的原因是此时make的约束力较强,即,我是否感到开心被“GMAT分数考的高”所控制。在绝大多数语境下, make的约束力均较强。
另外,代词them的指代对象没有问题,是其身前的名词durable goods。
B选项:Correct. 本选项在语法和逻辑上均是正确的。
C选项:主语a rise in interest rates是单数名词,和其谓语动词make主谓不一致;不定式短语to buy them on credit需改为ing短语buying them on credit,该错误同选项(A)。
D选项:a rise in interest rates和谓语动词make主谓不一致错误同(C)。
E选项:不定式的复合结构for them to be bought on credit错误同选项(A)。
E.it is adjective for sb to verb结构表达的是sb is having an experience described by adjective.如:It is hard for me to play the basketball. (I am having a hard time playing basketball.)。而在本选项中,them指代goods可知,goods are finding buying on credit more expensive,但goods本身并不能感受experience,故不可能有more expensive的经历,所以此结构使用错误。
RISING是定语,RAISING才可能是动名词
e.g.,
This book is hard for me to read.
(I experience difficulty in reading this book.)
It is difficult for Liz to talk to her ex-husband.
(liz has trouble talking to her ex. we don't know whether the converse is true.)
in the construction "it is (adjective) for XXXX to (verb)", the adjective describes what XXXX experience(s) in trying to (verb).
so, choice E is saying that the appliances themselves have to spend a lot of money "to be bought on credit". well, that doesn't make any sense.
rise不及物,raise及物
永远分不清rise和raise

是rise 使得expensive 而不是rates使得购买商品更expensive
为什么此题不能以这种思路来做呢?
记得有一道题就是这样排除了被adj修饰的noun,选的increase作为主语的
主谓一致排ACD,E很啰嗦,所以选B
You can't memorize this kind of thing as a structure, because structure isn't the issue. The issue is what the sentence means.
In the pair above, the incorrect example is wrong because political situations don't "cause gas prices"; that's nonsense. (Gas prices are not an event precipitated by political events.) In this instance, "increasing" is an adjective.
In the current sentence, the meaning is altogether different.
We're talking about the action of "buying on credit".
In addition, "buying" is the best noun available, because there's no dedicated noun form available (e.g., there's no such thing as, say, "buyage"). By contrast, the noun "increase" is available.
我相信看过Ron视频的同学,对正确答案"Political situations caused a increase in gas prices"(而不是increasing gas prices)记忆尤深,所以这道题也会有点困惑。我搬运一下Ron对于这个的解释,
感觉判断主语有点纠结,之前有道类似的题是rise in price和 rising price,最后是rise。。。
你没有记错,我正是因为那道题“political situations have caused an increase in gas prices”是正确答案,所以这里我选择了a rise,但是一般来说,rise做动词,rising做形容词使用,表示量的增加名词increase更合适,所以这道题跟那道题有有所不同
不过我查了一下词典,也查到“We are expecting a rise in interest rates.”这样的例句,让我很困惑

rising 表示 adj.
ACD谓语动词的数搭配错误;E makes it more expensive to be bought... 转换成 makes "to be bought" more expensive for them...

them is highly ambiguous, because it could refer to durable goods, orders, interest rates...almost anything

make buying on credit more expensive这样解释对不对,上升利率,不管你买不买,远期商品的成本一般都会上升(社会融资成本上升),和用不用信贷买没有关系。
这题够难的,太狡猾了。
实际上,利率上升不会导致耐用品更贵,而是导致借钱买耐用品这个行为更贵。
错在将rising interest rates 理解成了ing短语,而去找单数谓语!!谨记谨记!!
