ron: choice b contains an unacceptable ambiguity: the modifying phrase 'depending on its mass' is clearly supposed to what the star is doing, but, in choice b, it could technically also refer to passing through a red giant stage. (in other words, one could read the sentence as though the star's passing through a red giant stage depends upon the star's mass).即不是谁的mass的问题而是depending在可能变成修饰从句的动词，不知道有没有回答到你的问题

comma+doing除了可以做伴随状语，也可以做定语或状语，A：把depending on看成前一个动词的状语， after the star passes through a red giant stage, depending on mass，穿还是不穿取决于质量能读通；把它看成定语修饰a red giant stage, depending on mass，一个取决于体积的红巨过程，也能读通；说明depending on用得不好要让depending on明确修饰star，就要利用有逻辑关系的两部分尽量靠近的规则来构建句子，或者像D这样写，完全无歧义
破折号是"a group..."，同位语修饰，那前面一定是人"shareholders"，而不能是所有格。"while neglecting that of"对应前面的"the expectations of their major shareholders"，所以不是that是those。
