Laboratory rats and mice live up to 40 percent longer than usual when fed a diet of at least 30 percent fewer calories than that which they would normally eat, but that otherwise contains all necessary vitamins and nutrients.
of at least 30 percent fewer calories than that which they would normally eat, but that otherwise
with at least 30 percent fewer calories than what they would normally eat though otherwise it
that has at least 30 percent fewer of the calories that they would normally eat, but otherwise it
that has at least 30 percent fewer calories than they would normally eat but that otherwise
that has at least 30 percent fewer calories than that which they would normally eat, though that otherwise
首先,具有fewer calories than关系的两者应该是a diet和a diet that they would normally eat,所以than后需要写出比较的对象(时态或情态等任何的不同均不能省略),即they would normally eat,可以排除(A)(B)(E)。 30%(at least 30 percent fewer calories than they would normally)”和“所有的营养以及维他命是一样的(contains all necessary vitamins and nutrients)”,即,这个diet中,虽然某些“坏东西”少了,但是“好东西”没有什么变化,因此has at least 30 percent应该和contains all necessary vitamins and nutrients平行,可以排除(C),答案为(D)。
but otherwise it VS but that otherwise
e: than that which they would normally eat, 错误
e选项,that指代有歧义,第一个(不含引导从句的那个)that指代diet,同一代词指代相同,而though后的that明确应指代make rats live longer的diet,而非泛指的that,所以错
the "that which" is ambiguous here. Whenever you're unsure of a pronoun, swap the antecedent back in: "... fewer calories than THE DIET which they would normally eat..." You don't "eat" a diet. You eat food, you eat calories, etc. But we tend to treat "diet" as an abstract noun - it's the rules of food consumption, but not the food itself.
如果是diet的话,就用than that they would eat.但是比的是卡路里的话就单纯than they would eat就好...
针对于D选项,就算可以等同于“吃”这个行为,那么than的左边没有平行对称的结构啊“they would normally eat”,than的左边,就算补全了也是they are fed a diet that ......
A、B、C、E里面的代词(it, that)都指代了they would normally eat的diet,没有转折和比较关系。
用到这一题来,ABE中我们找than后面的部分均为which/what,指的是diet。
比较是在两个diet之间,a diet has at least 30 percent fewer calories than (a diet) they would normally eat
that has at least 30 percent fewer calories than they would normally eat 和but that otherwise 是平行关系,两个that 同时做定语从句修饰 a diet
多了it

do not use a comparative adjective unless you have a "than" in the sentence
我觉得it的指代不明可以排除b选项;
a跟e里面后面分句的that仍然指代不明,因为前文有两个that,所以没有精准表达句子意思;

除此之外,A、E选项中的that和which连用是否有语法错误啊?
那A选项不就是a diet和a diet的比较吗?
that(代词,指代的前文的a diet) which they would normally eat(一个定语从句)
